photoNotes - v1.2 Beta

by Nathan Bittinger

What is it?

photoNotes is a prototype that lets you look up details and specifications about your photographic equipment anywhere you are. At the moment, it only includes a static list of lenses that I own, and their specs. In the future I hope to extend this to be a data-driven model with a distributed network of users who select equipment from lists and are able to login and do lookups easily.

When is it launching?

So far there has been little time on my part to work on this, and there has been very little community interest in a tool like this, so it could wind up being a personal utility that never gets release.

Sigma 70-300mm

Lenses

Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG MACRO

Telephoto zoom lenses with excellent cost performance and optimized for use with digital SLR cameras.

Capable of macro photography, this lens has a 1:2 maximum close-up magnification at the 300 mm focal length. It’s the ideal high performance lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range. It also has a switch for changeover to macro photography at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm with a maximum close-up magnification from 1:2.9 to 1:2.SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass in this lens provides excellent correction of chromatic aberration.

New coating reduces Ghost and Flare.

The new multi layer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance through the entire zoom range.

SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass

We used SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass in this lens for excellent correction of chromatic aberration. This also corrects for fluctuation of aberration due to focusing. High optical performance is demonstrated throughout the entire zoom range.

Macro shooting with maximum magnification 1:2

It is capable of macro photography with a 1:2 maximum close-up magnification at the 300mm focal length. The minimum focusing distance is 1.5 m/59 inches at all zoom settings. It also has a switch for changeover to macro photography at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm with a maximum close-up magnification from 1:2.9 to 1:2 and a minimum focusing distance of 95cm (37.4 in).

Without changing the distance between camera and subject, you can change the shooting magnification.

Canon 18-55mm

Lenses

Canon EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6

About the Lens

The EF-S 18-55/3.5-5.6 is an unusual Canon EOS lens. It was designed only to be mountable on the Digital Rebel (EOS 300D) body since it has a reduced image circle (enough for the Digital Rebel sensor, but not enough for full frame 35mm) and it sticks further into the camera body than a normal EF series lens. [Editor's Note: A variant of this lens is also part of the Canon Rebel XT when sold as a kit with a lens. That lens is called the Canon EF-S 18-55m f/3.5-5.6 II. It has been reported that the newer model has the same optics as the old model and the only differences are cosmetic.]

The "S" in EF-S stands for "Short back focus". Back focus is the distance from the rearmost point of the last optical surface of the lens to the film or sensor. There are certain advantages in lens design in having this distance small for wide-angle lenses, but the limit in SLR cameras is determined by the requirement that the SLR mirror must not hit the lens when it flips up. The mirror on the Digital Rebel is smaller than that of full frame 35mm cameras because the sensor is smaller and the mirror only needs to be large enough to cover the area of the sensor. This allows the use of a lens with a shorter back focus distance.
